Mornag
Is a photography project that, through a visual reinterpretation of traditional chants, tells the stories of various women who passed down the designs and techniques of Mornag, a form of textile art and traditional clothing created by Guna women.
This traditional textile art has been a key part of Gunadule communities for centuries. For generations, the techniques for crafting Mornag have been passed down from mother to daughter, accompanied by chants that recount its creation and the legacy of the women who dedicated themselves to preserving and sharing this art.
Mornag is notable not only for the skill required in its creation, but also for its deep cultural and communal significance. According to tradition, the creator of the universe, Bab Dummad, gifted this knowledge to the Gunadule people. Later, a woman named Nanaologwadule would craft the first Mornag using cotton plants and various natural elements from the earth.
These stories, along with personal experiences, inspired me to create this photography project, highlighting the symbolic importance of Mornag, which is vital to Guna history and worldview.
